How this GPA calculator works

Each letter grade is converted to grade points on the standard 4.0 scale. Every course counts in proportion to its credit hours, so a 4-credit class moves your GPA more than a 1-credit class. The calculator adds up the grade points, multiplies by credits, and divides by your total credits.

GPA = sum of (grade points × credits) ÷ total credits

Example

CourseGradePointsCreditsPoints × credits
BiologyA4.0416.0
EnglishB+3.339.9
HistoryB3.039.0
ArtA-3.7311.1
Total1346.0

46.0 ÷ 13 = 3.54 GPA.

Most schools count A+ as 4.0. Some colleges use 4.33; check your school's handbook if you are unsure. See the full GPA scale and conversion chart.

Weighted vs. unweighted GPA

An unweighted GPA treats every class the same, so the maximum is 4.0. A weighted GPA rewards harder classes. The most common rule, used by this calculator, adds 0.5 points for honors classes and 1.0 point for AP and IB classes. An A in AP Calculus then counts as 5.0. No bonus is added for an F.

Colleges see both. Many recalculate your GPA with their own rules, so it helps to know your unweighted number too.

Cumulative GPA

Your cumulative GPA covers every term so far. To update it, open "Get your cumulative GPA" in the calculator and enter your previous GPA and the credits it covers. The calculator merges them with this term's grades:

Cumulative GPA = (previous GPA × previous credits + this term's grade points) ÷ all credits

Example: a 3.0 GPA over 30 credits plus a 4.0 term of 15 credits gives (90 + 60) ÷ 45 = 3.33.

FAQ

Is a 3.0 GPA good?

A 3.0 equals a B average. It meets the minimum for many colleges and scholarships. Selective colleges usually expect 3.5 or higher.

Can a GPA be higher than 4.0?

Only a weighted GPA. With AP or honors bonuses, a weighted GPA can reach 4.5 or 5.0. An unweighted GPA tops out at 4.0.

How many credits is a class?

In high school, a full-year class is usually 1 credit and a semester class 0.5. In college, most classes are 3 or 4 credit hours. Your transcript lists the exact values.

Do pass/fail classes count?

Usually not. Pass/fail and withdrawn classes are normally left out of GPA, so leave them out of the calculator too.
